Foundations of Leadership and Vision
From the oil fields of Libya to the intersections of Southern California, Ken Tait brought vision, discipline, and purpose to every chapter of his career.
TAIT’s story begins with its founder, Kenneth E. Tait (1930-2025), whose career was shaped by service, technical expertise, and a willingness to embrace opportunity. After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, Ken earned his Civil Engineering degree (and later in life, his Ph.D.) from Montana State University and joined Standard Oil.
His work took him to projects across the globe, from the oil fields of the United States to the deserts of Libya, where he led the discovery of the El Gattar #1 oil well – the first oil well in the country.
These formative experiences broadened his technical skills and nurtured a mindset that valued hard work, resilience, and the courage to explore uncharted paths – qualities that would guide the creation of TAIT.
Return to the U.S.
Upon returning to the United States, and with an entrepreneurial spirit as his foundation, Ken settled his family in Orange County in search of a new challenge. There, in 1964, he established Tait & Associates, beginning with a focus on site design for major oil companies during a period of rapid growth in California. TAIT became known for its ability to deliver high-quality engineering design at scale for hundreds of strategic intersections and deliver projects with both efficiency and attention to detail. From the earliest days, Ken emphasized adaptability, integrity, and a deep understanding of client needs – principles that not only helped the company succeed in its first decades but also laid the groundwork for long-term stability and growth.
Growth Through Expertise and Integrity
TAIT’s national growth has been shaped by its commitment to environmental stewardship, thoughtful engineering, and practical solutions across diverse sectors.
Over the years, TAIT expanded its capabilities to address the evolving needs of its clients and communities. Recognizing the importance of environmental stewardship, the company developed expertise in the design, installation, and maintenance of fueling systems nationwide, along with compliance, inspection, and safety services. These efforts reflected a broader commitment to protecting public health and the environment while maintaining the company’s strong engineering foundation. By integrating these environmental services with its development and infrastructure work, TAIT positioned itself to serve clients across a diverse range of industries.
Spreading our Footprint
Today, TAIT has grown into a national firm with offices throughout the Western United States. The company’s work spans broadly across multiple market sectors including Private Development, Programmatic Development, Public Infrastructure, Oil & Gas, and Renewable Energy, reflecting the versatility and problem-solving approach that has been part of its DNA since Ken Tait’s first ventures. While TAIT’s reach now extends far beyond its Southern California beginnings, it remains grounded in the same values that fueled its early success: curiosity, persistence, and a commitment to delivering solutions that stand the test of time.
The company’s teams are encouraged to approach every project with both technical expertise and an openness to innovation, ensuring they can adapt to changing technologies, regulations, and client expectations.
Looking Ahead: Development and Impact
As master developer, TAIT is shaping future communities with the same integrity and foresight that has guided its work for over 60 years – and planning for the next 60.
Building on its experience delivering complex services, TAIT has expanded into development as a principal owner, serving as master developer for large-scale projects throughout the Western U.S.
This step reflects the company’s long-term vision to shape places more directly, leveraging its planning, engineering, and entitlement background to lead thoughtful, community-driven developments. Through this role, TAIT continues to apply its values of collaboration, technical rigor, and local sensitivity to projects that will define communities for decades to come.
Three Generations Strong
Now in its third generation of leadership, TAIT continues to look toward the future while honoring its history. The firm’s growth is driven not by expansion for its own sake, but by a focus on meaningful impact – strengthening the communities it serves, building lasting client relationships, and approaching every challenge with the thoughtful, solutions-focused mindset that Ken Tait exemplified.
As TAIT moves forward, it carries with it the same entrepreneurial spirit that has guided it for decades: embracing change, seeking opportunity, and working to shape the built environment in ways that support both present needs and future possibilities.
